The importance of preserving the memory of those who fought and died for the freedom of future generations has been underscored in a new report.
The Isle of Man Government’s Preservation of War Memorials Committee published its 2023/24 annual report this week, following its presentation in Tynwald. It highlights ongoing efforts to maintain and protect Manx war memorials that honour the legacy of those who served their country and give people in the Isle of Man places to remember their sacrifice.
Throughout the past year, the Committee has engaged in significant activities to improve the condition and visibility of 223 Manx war memorials, including inspections, maintenance, and thorough documentation across numerous sites.
A key milestone this year was the centenary celebration of the Douglas War Memorial, marked by historical documentation and public events. Located on Loch Promenade, the memorial honours 641 lives lost during WWI, with each name a testament to the Island’s rich history and resilience. Work is ongoing to discover the story behind each of the Island’s fallen, and to learn more about the names on our memorials.

'Future initiatives, outlined in the report, include plans for a comprehensive new war memorials register, expanded educational outreach, and strengthened partnerships with local heritage bodies.
'This work is all done by volunteers, which makes these efforts all the more special. The committee’s work is vital in preserving the memories and stories of those who served, ensuring they are honoured and remembered.'
