The Isle of Man has marked a significant milestone for its farming community, as the first calf was registered on a new online identification and traceability system this week.
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture's new system makes it quicker and easier for farmers to register cattle births, deaths, and transfers, replacing outdated technology that had been in place for decades.
Cattle identification and traceability is a legal requirement across the Isle of Man, UK and EU. Once registered, each calf is issued with a passport, linked to a unique identification number displayed on its ear tags. The passports have also been redesigned as part of the project to make it easier to process for keepers and the department.
Richard Creer, from Ballabunt Farm in Braddan, who registered the first calf on the new system, said:
'I really like it. It’s so easy to use and a real improvement for farmers going forward. If I can use it, anyone can.'
The Isle of Man Electronic Identification System (IoMEID) fulfils a key objective in DEFA's Department Plan to deliver a reliable and functional system that meets legal obligations, ensures food safety, prevents disease and enables trade to continue.
Dr Amy Beckett, the Isle of Man’s Chief Veterinary Officer, said:
'I want to thank the team who have worked so hard over the past five years to bring this to fruition.
'Our farming community relies on a robust and efficient system to meet their legal obligations, and this investment reflects our commitment to providing modern, functional services that make their lives easier.'
The Department has hosted more than 100 local farmers at engagement events and workshops to talk them through the new system. Farmers can access it on the Livestock Traceability website or contact the Animal Health team for further information.
