Farmers across the Isle of Man are taking practical steps to improve soil health and reduce carbon emissions, showing that sustainability, productivity and profitability can go hand in hand.
To support this work, the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA) recently hosted a presentation and workshop with Becky Wilson from the UK-based Farm Carbon Toolkit — an organisation created by farmers, for farmers, to help them measure, understand and reduce their carbon footprint.
Around 40 farmers attended the event, which focused on practical ways to build resilience, cut costs and enhance sustainability on the land.
This initiative forms part of the Agricultural Strategy, which aims to build a strong, innovative, and sustainable sector in line with the UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man principles.
Becky shared how farmers can make small but meaningful changes — from improving soil management and reducing fertiliser use to planting trees and protecting biodiversity. She explained that measuring carbon and enhancing soil health can build resilience, cut costs and add long-term value to farming businesses.
She said:
'It was fantastic to meet so many farmers from across the Isle of Man and hear about the excellent work they’re already doing. The enthusiasm and commitment here are inspiring — many Manx farmers are already leading by example and demonstrating good business sense.'
Clare Barber MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, added:
'Our farmers are showing initiative in strengthening their businesses while caring for the environment. By supporting access to the systems and experts at Farm Carbon Toolkit, we’re helping to ensure that Manx agriculture remains sustainable and resilient — protecting our land, food supply and way of life for generations to come.'
Improved efficiency and sustainability will help achieve these reductions while securing the long-term future of Manx agricultural businesses.
