An exciting vision for the future of transport in the island has been published.
The Isle of Man Government’s Transport Strategy looks forward to more sustainable travel that’s fit for future needs.
Its aim is to develop a transport system which improves safety and accessibility and supports economic and population change, while decarbonising transport and minimising harmful environmental impacts.
Minister for Infrastructure Dr Michelle Haywood MHK said:
‘Our vision is to align our transport policy with three priorities of Our Island Plan – a strong and diverse economy; building great communities and an environment we can be proud of.’
She added:
‘The Government’s Transport Strategy 2025-35 has been shaped by the feedback we received from residents, visitors, businesses and government partners during our consultation.
‘It will provide the foundations for our transport system to become safer and healthier and to enable economic growth.’
Among its objectives are to:
- Prepare for demographic changes
- Enhance economic sustainability
- Support inclusivity and equality
- Improve the built environment
- Promote road safety
- Help to meet the Island’s climate change commitments
- Build on the Island’s position as the only nation with UNESCO Biosphere status.
The strategy envisions the promotion of active travel, such as walking and cycling where possible and practical, increasing public transport use and making alternatives to using cars more attractive.
It also seeks to support the adoption and use of zero-emissions vehicles by supporting more chargepoint installations, moving the government fleet to electric vehicles and harmonising taxes for hybrid, zero-emission and fossil-fuel vehicles.
In terms of travel on and off the island, the strategy looks forward to the development of more sustainable air and sea links.
