The last use of the all-Island sirens will be to mark VE Day

Wednesday, 6 May 2020

Statement from the Isle of Man Government.

At 3pm on Friday 08 May, the all-Island sirens will sound the all clear for the last time to mark the 75th Anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in Europe.

The sirens are currently used to warn and inform the public of developing emergency situations with the instruction on hearing them to Go In, Stay In and Tune In. The sirens will still be used by the Fire and Rescue Service to alert some of their retained staff for the foreseeable future.

Sadly the sirens are now becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and their impact is becoming less. The Emergency Planning Unit has worked with other government departments to identify a technology based replacement for the current siren system and is pleased to announce that Everbridge will be providing a mass notification system.

Island residents will be able to receive critical safety messages via more than 20 contact paths including, SMS, email, voice, mobile app, and landline. Messages will only be sent for life threatening situations or when important safety messages for the public need to be made. Those that sign up will receive critical information for ongoing situations ensuring everyone is kept as safe as possible.
