The Primary Schools’ Sure Sportshall Athletics Festival was held recently at the National Sports Centre in Douglas, with almost 500 children from twenty-two primary schools taking part in competitions.
The annual festival organised by the Department of Education and Children was sponsored by Sure and supported by a visit from Mike Frost, Development Officer from Sportshall UK. The Sportshall UK framework adapts traditional track and field athletics for indoor competition.
Manx Sport and Recreation community coaches have been preparing pupils for the athletics festival by delivering physical education lessons and after-school clubs to practice a broad spectrum of events, including obstacle relays, foam javelin, speed bounce and indoor adaptations of long and triple jump.
Michael Haslett, Community Sports Development Officer said:
'The Department’s Strategy for Sport outlines the need to increase levels of physical activity among young children. Festivals like this open up chances for children to get involved in different sports. The Sportshall UK framework is an excellent way of introducing the Island’s primary school pupils to the various skills involved in athletics.
'We are grateful to the local athletics clubs and the MSR community coaches who helped support the event. Special thanks must go to Mike Frost from Sportshall UK for his endless enthusiasm during the festival and to Sure Isle of Man for the valuable sponsorship. Well done to all the children for taking part.'
