QEII students cycle for their Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Thursday, 9 October 2014

Five students from Queen Elizabeth II High School decided that instead of completing their Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Expedition by foot, they would complete their journey by bicycle.

Jack Corlett, year 11, said

'We are all keen cyclists and we wanted the challenge of carrying our camping equipment and food by bike. Over the three days we cycled through plantations, along greenways and mountain paths. Our project was to look at some of the existing mountain bike trails and review them. We also designed on paper a mountain bike trail for 4-8 year olds in Silverdale Glen. We think an introductory trail for children would be a great addition to the facilities already in the Glen.'

Danielle Barton, also year 11, added

'It was a great experience and we loved the challenges. It is something we would do again. I can’t wait to do my Gold.'

The group would like to thank Paul Melling from the Youth Service for allowing them to borrow bike racks and paniers for their expedition.
