'Objects from the past' artist makes flying visit

Wednesday, 19 March 2014

David CassAn artist who takes objects from the past and paints on them contemporary land and seascapes is the next guest in the Citywing ‘Artist on a Plane’ series of public lectures.

David Cass’s talk at the Market Hall, Douglas, on Thursday 10 April, 7pm, is the second in a year-long series organised by the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education to mark Island of Culture 2014

The 26-year-old Scot graduated with first class honours from Edinburgh College of Art in 2010, receiving the Royal Scottish Academy’s John Kinross Scholarship to Florence, Italy. The academy holds six of his works in its permanent collection.

David has spent time working in Italy, Belgium and France and has exhibited at home and abroad. He has pieces in private collections all over the world.

His first full-scale solo exhibition, Years of Dust and Dry, took place at The Scottish Gallery in June 2013 and featured 200 object-based artworks, created over three years and displayed not just on walls but on tables, shelves and stacked boxes to create the atmosphere of a flea market or antique fair.

David said:

‘One of the key determinants in my practice is the notion of a sense of place. My artworks are snapshots, fleeting glimpses, simplified depictions of city, coast, sea and land painted upon fragments of the past.’

David has won numerous art awards and was shortlisted, with his work included on the touring exhibition, in the prestigious Sunday Times Watercolour Competition in 2012.

The lecture is free to attend.

While he’s in the Island, David will also work with students taking art degrees at the College.
