Liverpool Ferry Terminal

The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal in Liverpool has been shortlisted for a prestigious British architecture award.

It is one of four developments in this year’s Architects’ Journal Awards Infrastructure and Transport Project category.

As part of the judging process, a panel from the Architects’ Journal visited the Terminal earlier this month to assess the building.

The visit was an important element in the Awards process, which recognises and promotes excellence in architectural design and innovation across the British Isles.

The Department of Infrastructure, in collaboration with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and architectural firm The Manser Practice, worked closely with the judging panel to coordinate the visit.

David Gooberman, Director of Harbours at the Department of Infrastructure, said:

‘We are thrilled to see the Terminal recognised at this level. It’s a testament to the years of hard work and vision of everyone involved in the project.

‘The building not only serves a vital transport function, but also represents a modern, stylish and functional gateway to the Isle of Man. It is a fabulous facility that will welcome visitors to the Isle of Man for decades to come.’

The Terminal, located at No. 1 Triskelion Way in Liverpool, is owned by the Isle of Man Government and opened to passengers in June 2024. It has been praised for its design, functionality and contribution to enhancing the Island’s connectivity with the UK.

Infrastructure Minister Dr Michelle Haywood MHK said:

‘The Ferry Terminal is a key strategic asset for the Isle of Man. The fact that it has been so well-received in the architectural community underlines the quality of its design and execution.

‘Everyone involved in this project should be proud of the part they played in this success.’

James Whittaker, Managing Director of Peel Waters, said:

‘It is fantastic news for the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal at Liverpool Waters to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award. The building is testament to the high design standards we hold at Liverpool Waters and has provided the city with another striking architectural landmark.

‘The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal at Liverpool Waters has provided improved vital connectivity between the Isle of Man and the City of Liverpool.’

The winners will be announced at a celebratory dinner in London on November 27.

The Ferry Terminal’s rivals in the shortlist are a footbridge in Worcester, a new entrance to a London Underground station and a transport interchange in Stockport.
