Apply for a road closure or traffic restriction

The Department may temporarily close roads or restrict traffic to cater for:

  • Road maintenance or bridge repairs
  • Requests for essential works on or under the highway and
  • Events affecting the highway, such as, road races, carnivals, filming etc

Apply for a road closure for works 

You can apply for a temporary road closure or traffic restriction either by post or email. Before you apply, make sure you are familiar with our conditions

Notice 

You will need to give us at least 6 weeks notice when applying for a road closure.  

This will enable us to:

  • Check the information supplied is sufficient
  • Assess the feasibility of the closure and proposed diversion routes
  • Give notice of the proposed closure
  • Provide you with the lawful authority to close the road, or place or amend a restriction on it.

How much does it cost? 

Application cost is £150. 

When we have approved your application in principle, payment is required by electronic transfer only to –

We levy this charge based upon the average cost of processing a routine Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice (TTRN).  It does not include any temporary traffic management costs, such as signs and barriers.  

Refunds

Within 2 weeks of application date, a cancellation fee of 50% applies.  Anything after this time is charged at 100%.  Any cancellation requests must be in writing.  You may also send an email using the ‘contact us’ section below.

What happens if I need to extend the closure? 

You must submit a new application and give at least 14 days’ notice, where it is reasonable to do so. 

Payment must also be made as soon as you receive an approval in principle.

Failure to submit an extension TTRN within a reasonable notice period or not make the necessary payment will result in the restriction being lifted.

In accordance with section 3 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1985.
