Who's who in CAMHS

camhs owlMany different types of professionals work together in CAMHS. CAMHS professionals aim to:

  • assess what might be causing mental health difficulties
  • offer support, treatment and provide ideas about how to improve the wellbeing of children and young people

Take a look at some of the people you might meet when interacting with CAMHS.

Who's who in CAMHS
Advocate An adult who can speak and act on behalf of the child or young person such as a parent or carer.
Art Therapist Someone who offers sessions with talking and art materials to help the child or young person express and explore their feelings.
CAMHS Social Worker Trained to work with young people and their families who are experiencing relationship or emotional/behavioural difficulties, and often have further specialist training.
CAMHS Psychiatrist Medically qualified doctors who are specially trained in understanding and working with mental health difficulties children and young people experience.
CAMHS Manager The person who oversees the day to day operation of the service. They are the link with other agencies and services. If you are unhappy with the service you are receiving you can speak with the CAMHS manager about your concerns.
Clinical Psychologist Professionals who are trained to help children and young people understand the links between their thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
Counsellor People who help children and adolescents to explore feelings about their life so that they can reflect about what is happening and find different ways of doing things.
Family Therapist Trained therapists who work with children and their families together, to help them understand and manage the difficulties that are happening in their lives. They can help the child and their family to express and explore difficult thoughts safely and build on family strengths.
Psychotherapist Trained therapists who offer longer and more in depth therapy to help the child work through their thoughts, feelings and what may be behind them.
