Isle of Man Children’s Champion

The role of the Children's Champion

Kerry Sharpe, MLC

My main job is to be a voice for children who are in care, young carers and children with complex needs.

I also have a duty to make sure that all children in the Isle of Man know their rights.

Message to all children in the Isle of Man

As a child, you have human rights. Human rights are laws which are meant to protect you.

These laws say you must not go hungry or thirsty. You must have shelter. You must not be harmed.

When important decisions are being made about you, adults must listen to your opinions and think about what’s best for you.

Part of my job is to make sure you know your rights.

Many of children's human rights are set out in a law called The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

If you think someone has gone against your rights, it's important to talk to an adult you trust, for example a family member or a teacher. But if you don't have anyone to talk to, you can contact me via the details below. I will try to find the best person to help you.

I won't be able to reply straight away but I will reply as soon as I can.

Remember to tell me your name and a way I can contact you, for example by telling me your email address, the name of your school or your phone number.

Isle of Man Children's Champion banner with Kerry Sharpe's cartoonI would love to know what you think about children's rights.

Are there any rights you think adults need to work better at providing?

Do you feel you are listened to and treated fairly?

Are there any rights you'd like to learn more about?

In particular, if you are a child in care, a young carer or a child with complex needs, do you feel your rights are being respected?

You or an adult you trust can contact me via the details above.

Remember to leave your name and a way I can contact you, for example by telling me your email address, the name of your school or your phone number.
