Waste disposal licence public consultation

The Environment Protection Unit must consult the public and relevant organisations on applications for Waste Disposal Licenses or Directions (for government sites), including variations (changes) to licences. This page describes how we meet this legal requirement, and links to the applications currently under public consultation.

When we make a licence decision, we use information on the potential environmental and human health impacts of the activity.

Public consultation lets people and organisations take part in our decision making. You can comment on issues that could affect you or where you have particular knowledge. We take all relevant comments into account so we can make better decisions.

How we consult on licence applications

When we consult on a licence application it is published at the bottom of this page and advertised in the local newspaper.

This explains for each application:

  • what the application is about
  • where you can view the application documents
  • how you can comment
  • when you need to comment by
  • where the public consultation is advertised

Timings for licence application consultations

When we need to consult on a licence application we will where possible start the consultation within 30 days of it being ‘duly made’.

An application is duly made when we have all the information to make the draft licence and if required for more complex applications the draft decision document.

Licence consultations are usually available for comment for 21 days from the day of being advertised. If we need to licence an activity in an emergency we may need to consult for less time. If the application is of high public interest we may consult for longer.
