The Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Team (PMHLT) has been established by Manx Care to ensure mothers and their families receive the mental health support they need from their child’s conception until their child is 2 years old.
The team's primary goal is to prevent any long-term negative impact on the mother, their child and their family from poor mental health during the perinatal period. The perinatal period creates a unique opportunity to support and treat mental health problems, which helps to strengthen families, ensures children have the best start in life and reduces the risk of unnecessary suffering, isolation and suicide.
Currently, the Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Team consists of the Enhanced Care Midwife and the Specialist Health Visitor, with plans to expand to include more professionals in the future.
The team meets weekly to discuss the individual needs of mothers and their families to ensure they receive the right support from the right service. This support may involve additional visits from Midwifery and Health Visiting, self-care resources, access to MUMS peer support groups, or assistance from various resources such as GPs, Community Wellbeing Service, Mental Health Service for Adults, and the Drug and Alcohol Team.
The Perinatal Mental Health Liaison Team can be accessed by referrals from professionals involved in your care or by self-referral (email a self-referral form to PNMHLT@gov.im). The team will get back to you as soon as possible, however, it may not been the same day.
If you feel you are unable to keep yourself or someone else safe, please call 999.
If you require urgent support due to a significant deterioration in your mental health and/or an increase in psychological distress, please call the Crisis Response and Home Treatment Team on +44 1624 642860.
