People are being asked to share their views on the latest plans to refresh and modernise the Isle of Man’s education laws.

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture has today launched a six-week consultation on the draft Education (Amendment) Bill, which is designed to update education laws in line with current expectations and future needs.

Key areas such as inclusion, safeguarding and provision for additional educational needs require updated legal frameworks to ensure that all children and young people are supported to thrive—whatever their background or circumstance.

This proposed legislation is a vital step toward delivering the goals of Our Island Plan, which places strong, inclusive and future-ready education at the heart of national development. The draft Bill outlines practical reforms across nine priority areas, including:

  • Promoting the education of children who are looked after
  • Alternative provision of education
  • Religious education
  • Admissions and school capacity
  • Additional safeguarding measures
  • Emergency school closures
  • Children who are not in school
  • Educational grants and funding
  • Additional educational needs

Daphne Caine MHK, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, said:

'I encourage all stakeholders—educators, parents and members of the public—to participate in the consultation and share their valuable insights.

'Together, we can shape a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed in line with the goals of Our Island Plan.'

People are encouraged to read the proposals and provide their feedback before 15 June.
