Shooter Tim Kneale described his experience at the Rio Olympics at the recent annual meeting of Isle of Man Sport.
The double trap competitor and current world record holder from the Isle of Man narrowly missed out on a medal in a thrilling final in August.
Tim was welcomed to the meeting during a visit home and was greeted by Graham Cregeen MHK, new Minister for Education and Children, who has responsibility for sport.
Mr Cregeen said:
‘The Island was proud of Tim and, of course, of Mark Cavendish, who achieved a silver medal at Rio.
‘It was good to hear first-hand about Tim’s experiences and congratulate him for enhancing the Island’s reputation in the sporting world.’
New members of Isle of Man Sport were also announced at the meeting.
The body is an independent forum for the promotion and development of sport and recreation and advises the Department of Education and Children.
It helps to deliver the Isle of Man Government’s strategic objectives in relation to sport.
The body comprises eight members who are appointed by the Council of Ministers for four years.
Members retire by rotation and, following the advertisement of vacancies, Andy Varnom, Marie Morgan and David Morgan were welcomed as the newest committee members, with Sarah Corlett continuing for a further term.
Andy Varnom was head of Manx Sport and Recreation for 14 years and co-ordinated the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, held in the Island.
As a former Olympic athlete, Marie Morgan will offer a unique insight into the running of sport.
David Morgan has long been involved in clay target shooting and was instrumental in securing the shooting facility at Meary Veg. He was formerly a member of the Manx International Rally organising committee.
Gary Corkhill, Executive Chairman of Isle of Man Sport, said:
‘The new and returning members were selected from a strong group of candidates, who we would like to thank for applying.
‘It is heartening that the interest in getting involved with, and furthering, sport in the Island is so strong.’
Isle of Man Sport thanks its three outgoing members, Laura Dalton, Clive Parrish and Graeme Watson, for their commitment over the past four years.
