The Finale - essentia

Helen Tate Image Degree ShowThis will be the very first year that we have BA Hons Fine Art students graduating with degrees awarded by the University of Chester.  The journey that the students embark on for three years is quite a tough one.  The level and depth of enquiry that they make in their final year is very demanding both intellectually and physically.  The students find their own pathways through a maze of options, working with media such as film, photography, ceramics , printmaking, textiles and digital processes to finally resolve ideas to this point: the end of year degree show.  Working and exhibiting in the Market Hall, in a public facing environment, has enabled them to make the transition from being students to artist. As Gail Corrin , Higher Education Manager explains,

'The use of the iconic Douglas Market Hall for the Fine Art and Visual Communication through Digital Media degrees is an excellent example of how island based higher education contributes not only to the students’ academic and professional development but importantly how it also enriches our broader community.'

UCM students and staff make a significant contribution to the island’s Creative Industries sector in a variety of ways. 'This exhibition,' Gail adds, 'is testament to the quality and capability of students as artists'.

BA Students and Helen Fox outside the Market Hall 24 May 2016Many people assume that at the end of your degree you have found the answers but it is quite simply the start of the next part of the journey with your creative practice. This group of graduates is diverse and the resulting show is dynamic, with students exhibiting work that is very innovative, thoughtful and contemporary.

A creative finale.
