Outcome of Equality Bill consultation

Wednesday, 14 October 2015

The Cabinet Office has today published a 110-page summary of responses to its consultation on the draft Equality Bill.

The Bill prohibits discrimination, in the provision of goods and services as well as in employment, on the grounds of specified characteristics including age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation. It also requires organisations to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate the needs of disabled people.

There were 70 responses to the consultation, some lengthy and detailed, spanning a wide range of views. However, the majority were generally supportive of comprehensive legislation against discrimination and for this to be based on the United Kingdom's Equality Act of 2010.

The Bill will now be finalised, taking into account certain points raised in the consultation, prior to being proposed for introduction to the branches of Tynwald.

The response document can be found on the Government website at: /ConsultationDetail.gov?id=454
