United Nations and European Union Sanctions: Liberia

Thursday, 8 October 2015

On 2 September 2015, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2237 which terminated the travel ban and asset freeze measures imposed on a number of individuals.

On 7 October 2015, Council Regulation (EU) No 2015/1776 similarly lifted the travel ban and asset freeze measures imposed as a result under Council Regulation (EC) No 872/2004, and repealed that Regulation.

The EU measures had been given effect in Isle of Man law, so that the sanctions measures also applied here.

Whilst the relevant Island legislation has not yet been revoked, the Treasury would like to make it clear that it will regard the sanctions measures as if also lifted here with immediate effect.

Businesses and individuals should note that export and trade control restrictions may continue to apply in respect of Liberia.

For more information on export and trade controls please see the sanctions and export control page on the Customs and Excise website.
