Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK has this week led a senior delegation to London to continue the Isle of Man Government’s programme of engagement with key figures in Westminster and the City.
Mr Bell and Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson MHK met a number of representatives from the main UK political parties, as well as attending an event at the London Stock Exchange promoting the International Festival for Business 2016.
Discussions were held with leading Conservative Party MPs, including Graham Brady MP, Chairman of the influential 1922 Committee, and Mark Field, MP for the Cities of London and Westminster. There was a strong focus on the proposed renegotiation of the UK’s membership of the EU, which gave the Chief Minister an opportunity to explain the Isle of Man’s position in relation to Europe.
Scotland’s changing political landscape and future aspirations were discussed during meetings with MPs from the Scottish National Party, including former First Minister Alex Salmond MP.
The delegation was also able to highlight the Isle of Man’s position on matters regarding financial transparency and international tax cooperation during the busy two-day visit.
The Chief Minister said:
‘Our policy of proactive engagement helps to promote greater awareness of the Isle of Man and its positive contribution to the UK and wider global economy. It is vital for our international reputation and future prosperity that we continue to articulate our position on important issues.’
He added:
‘It is useful to spend time on the ground in Westminster to hear first-hand about the UK referendum on EU membership. It is important to build an understanding of issues that may affect the Island to ensure we are well positioned to respond to future developments. Our aim is to strengthen relationships with key partners and to promote the Island’s best interests.’
The Chief Minister and Minister Watterson attended the opening of the day’s trading at the London Stock Exchange on Wednesday morning for an event to mark the countdown towards the International Festival for Business 2016, which takes place in Liverpool over three weeks next June.
The Island had a strong presence during the inaugural Festival in 2014, with the Department of Economic Development working alongside the business community to promote a range of investment opportunities. Plans are being put in place to return in 2016 to showcase the Island’s diverse and dynamic economy.
The Chief Minister said:
‘The International Festival for Business is one of the biggest events of its kind and attracts business owners, investors and entrepreneurs from around the world. It provides an opportunity for the Isle of Man to raise its international profile and generate fresh investment in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.’
