Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK has highlighted the Information and Communications Technology sector (ICT) as a key driver in the continued success of the Isle of Man economy.

ICT is identified as a central plank of the Island’s Vision 2020 strategy, with huge potential for future development.

Mr Bell said further growth and diversification of the Manx economy was essential to maintain the Island’s quality of life and create jobs for our young people.

The Chief Minister was speaking at an event on Tuesday evening (1 April) to celebrate the official launch of Isle of Man-based PDMS’s new Glasgow office.

PDMS, the largest software development company in the Island, is expanding into Scotland with a presence at The Hub in the centre of Glasgow’s digital media quarter. It is committed to creating 20 jobs in Scotland over the next four years.

The Chief Minister, who was in Glasgow to mark the restoration of direct flights between the Isle of Man and Scotland, said:

‘PDMS has been a valued partner of the Isle of Man Government for many years and it is encouraging to see a Manx company expanding into new markets.

‘We work hard to create an environment in which business can flourish, and PDMS is a shining example of a local operation with a global outlook. From a two-man enterprise in 1993, it has grown to become a key player in the development of the ICT sector in the Isle of Man, employing almost 60 people across a range of roles.’

He added:

‘I have today, alongside First Minister Alex Salmond, welcomed the further development of political and travel connections between the Isle of Man and Scotland. PDMS’s new office in Glasgow represents the strengthening of business links between us. I am sure that the company’s expansion will see mutual benefits for our two nations.’

Chris Gledhill, Managing Director of PDMS, said:

‘PDMS’s working relationship with the Isle of Man Government is based on a long term partnership in support of a distinctive and forward thinking jurisdiction. We look forward to making a similar contribution to the Scottish economy, again based on innovation and collaboration, to support the unique character of Scottish public services and business.’
