Using Online Services – services.gov.im
Ease of taxing a vehicle online
Taxing a vehicle online is simple and straightforward. The process has been online for a number of years and has been streamlined to be intuitive for anyone to use.
Search for services.gov.im, navigate to vehicles and driving, then to pay vehicle tax. You can choose to log in to save your details for next time for quicker completion or continue without.
Enter your registration number, confirm the details are correct then you will be able to tax it for 6 months or a year. Complete the payment and you are covered, and able to drive.
Your tax disc will be posted to you and must be displayed as soon as possible once received.
Using Online Services if you're not a confident computer user
These processes are designed to be as simple as possible and you can complete them on a phone, a laptop, an iPad or a computer.
If you do want help, we can assist you in person at the Vehicle Test Centre. There are also local charities running bookable sessions who can help support you too.
Ease of taxing a vehicle online vs at the counter
Taxing your vehicle usually takes around 10 minutes from start to end, without the need to travel to the Vehicle Test Centre to hand in your form.
Online applications are also quicker to process in the back office, as in most cases they just need to be printed and posted, whereas paper forms require inputting into the system by the back-office staff.

Speaking to a person if you need help with vehicle tax
If you wish to speak to a person. The Vehicle Test Centre in Braddan has a counter which is manned between 9am to 4pm. Alternatively, a number of libraries around the island can help you to print forms and signpost support to local charities around the Island who are happy to help you complete these services.
Tax Discs / Proof of Tax
Displaying a paper tax disc once you've taxed your vehicle
You still need a paper tax disc, and it is your legal responsibility to display it.
Recieving your tax disc by post
When you tax your vehicle online, or at the Vehicle Test Centre, or by post, your tax disc will be posted out to you after processing. This can take between 5 to 10 working days from payment, although is usually quicker, especially when using the online service.
Proof of vehicle tax if you don’t receive a disc straight away
Once you have paid, you will receive email confirmation to the email address provided as part of the process. You are considered taxed once you have paid and are therefore able to drive, and this is reflected in the online system. As soon as you receive your disc you should display it to be compliant.
If you're stopped or receive a parking ticket before your tax disc arrives
Enforcement officers will check the system if they find a vehicle with an expired tax disc; if the vehicle shows as recently taxed, they will exercise their discretion to ensure that vehicles are not ticketed where a tax disc has not yet been received in the post.
If you do receive a ticket, you can appeal using the details on the ticket.
Reasons why paper tax discs are still being used
The continued use of paper tax discs has been considered by Tynwald and remains the current legal requirement for vehicle tax on the Island.
Feedback on this is recorded and shared where appropriate should future discussions about changes to vehicle tax administration take place.
Eligibility and specific vehicle situations
Taxing a vehicle online if it’s been off the road or untaxed for a long time
You can tax a vehicle online whether it has been on or off the road, up to 2 years after expiry. If it expired more than 2 years ago, it would need a roadworthiness test first.
If the vehicle has been off the road, you can declare this when taxing it and pay for a new 6- or 12-month period from the date you start taxing it.
If it has been untaxed and not declared off the road, you will need to pay tax from when it was last taxed, along with the new 6- or 12-month period going forward.
Re-taxing a vehicle online if the tax has expired
You can re tax a vehicle online even if the tax has expired, subject to the same rules around off road declarations and the length of time since the vehicle was last taxed.
Taxing a vehicle online that you've just bought or sold
If you have just bought the car you need to change ownership first, and then you can pay outstanding tax.
Taxing a vehicle online if you've transferred or retained a cherished registration number
You will need to enter the current registration number for the car to continue. If you transferred or bought a new registration number recently, this may take a couple of days for the system to update to reflect that.
If your vehicle registration details or logbook haven’t been updated yet
This usually means the details are still being processed by the Vehicle Test Centre back office team.
Most changes are completed within 5 to 10 working days. If that time has passed, you can contact the Vehicle Test Centre for an update:
Telephone: +44 1624 686843
Email: driversandvehicles@gov.im
Documents and requirements
Uploading your insurance certificate to tax your vehicle online
Only where we cannot see that your vehicle is insured will you need to upload your insurance certificate. In most cases we receive confirmation direct from insurers, however not all insurers provide this, and it's in those instances we will ask you to upload a copy of your valid insurance certificate as proof.
Reasons why the system sometimes asks for documents and sometimes does not
You will only be asked to upload documents if some information cannot be confirmed automatically. In many cases, the system already has what it needs and no additional documents are required.
If the system doesn’t recognise your registration certificate number
If the system doesn't recognise your registration, you will need to phone the Vehicle Test Centre for assistance on +44 1624 686843.
If you're being asked to pay extra fees when taxing your vehicle online
When paying for your tax online, the final page will provide a breakdown of what you are being charged for. If there's something on there you don't think is right, you should take a photo or a screenshot and call or email the Vehicle Test Centre:
Telephone: +44 1624 686843
Email: driversandvehicles@gov.im
Multiple transactions and usability
Reasons why several vehicles or actions cannot be added into one 'basket'
After completing a transaction and reaching the payment basket, you can return to the Online Services home screen to complete another transaction. Once all required transactions are ready, they can be paid for together in a single payment.
We are aware this option is not obvious at the moment and are improving how this screen works to make clearer.
Recently made improvements to the online system
The last round of improvements was on 31 March ahead of the full online launch on 1 April. The next improvements will be early June, followed by further processes being released at the end of August.
Post Office and local access
Taxing your vehicle at the Post Office
You cannot tax your vehicle at the Post Office, but you can go there to post your completed forms to the Vehicle Test Centre.
Post Offices that offer vehicle tax services
No Post Offices offer vehicle tax services on the Isle of Man.
Reasons why you should use the online system even when the Post Office felt easier for you
As the Post Office is no longer available, the online system is likely to be the next best option for you. It is quick, simple to complete and is available any time of the day, anywhere you are. However, if you do prefer a counter service, you can visit the Vehicle Test Centre, and the Post Office will be able to post completed paper forms to the Vehicle Test Centre too.
Access, inclusion and fairness
People who don’t have internet access or a computer
We understand that there is a portion of the Island that isn't digitally connected for one reason or another. The Pay Vehicle Tax service was designed so that friends and family members can complete the service on behalf of someone else that can't do it.
Additionally, paper forms can be printed at most libraries, charities are available to help complete them, or the Vehicle Test Centre has digital devices, free Wi-Fi and face-to-face support available to anyone who needs it.
Alternative methods that are available for elderly or less digitally confident residents
For the elderly and less digitally confident residents, paper forms can be printed at most libraries, charities are available to help complete them, or the Vehicle Test Centre has digital devices, free Wi-Fi and face-to-face support available.
System reliability and delays
If you experience delays receiving logbooks or documents
Most documents are processed and delivered within the published 5 to 10 working day timescale.
If you have been waiting longer than 10 working days for your documents, please contact the Vehicle Test Centre, and we can investigate.
If you're still waiting for a logbook weeks or months later
If you have been waiting longer than 10 working days for your documents, please contact the Vehicle Test Centre, and we can investigate. Please don't wait longer than 10 working days to get in touch.
Who to contact if nobody is getting back to you
Due to the recent change of service, the Vehicle Test Centre is experiencing a high volume of enquiries. Voicemails and emails are reviewed and responded to outside of counter opening hours and the team aims to respond to all queries within the published 5 to 10 working days.
