Adoption of UK General licences
The Treasury has today issued a new Notice which sets out the list of United Kingdom General Licences ('UK GL'), relating to Russia and the Republic of Belarus, which have been formally adopted for use in the Isle of Man.
Under this framework, a UK GL adopted by the Isle of Man takes effect from the same date it was issued in the United Kingdom, and any subsequent amendments made by the UK will automatically take effect in the Island. This approach provides consistency for businesses, regulated entities, and members of the public who engage with sanctions legislation, removing previous uncertainty about timing or applicability of UK GLs.
There are specific reporting requirements contained within the Notice and you are advised to read the Notice carefully before conducting any activity under an adopted UK GL.
The Notice is issued under paragraph 1(5) and 5(2) of Schedule 3 to the Sanctions (Implementation of UK Sanctions) Regulations 2024 ('the Regulations'), as amended by the Sanctions (Amendment) Regulations 2026, which are made under the Sanctions Act 2024.
Revocation of Isle of Man Sanctions General Licences
With this Notice coming into effect, several existing Isle of Man Sanctions General Licences - previously issued to replicate UK GLs - will now be withdrawn, as the activities they permitted are available under the newly adopted UK GLs.
A separate communication will be issued listing the specific Isle of Man licences being withdrawn.
