Accessing Child Daycare

There are numerous child care options from child daycare centres (nurseries) to childminders on the Isle of Man, offering support to those parents who wish to access the appropriate service. A full list of child daycare services available across the Island can be viewed below:

Ages 0 – 3

Ages 3 - 4

Children attending pre-school are eligible for pre-school credits – a universal credit of £4,166 is available for each eligible child for the academic year. To be eligible, your child will be a resident of the Isle of Man, have their fourth birthday during the academic school year for which credit applies and is registered with an Isle of Man Government registered pre-school provider.

Support available for individuals and businesses

Vocational Training Assistance Scheme - this scheme offers financial assistance to both businesses and individuals wishing to undertake vocational training including childcare and enhance their own skills or the skills of their workforce. Eligible applications will be offered 30% of the cost of training, with individuals limited to maximum of £1,500 in any 12 months and businesses limited to maximum of £15,000 in any 12 months.

Micro Business Scheme - those looking to start up their own business or are in the early stages of their business may be eligible to receive the necessary training, funding and mentoring to get their business off the ground.

Financial Assistance Scheme - this scheme can offer help childcare services with the following:

Support for additional child care & nursery provision - grant towards rent, modification to building and play equipment, toys etc
Employee relocation incentive - grant of up to 20% towards bringing new employees to the Isle of Man to help fill skills

Nursery and childcare

People working in early years childcare and education are trained to offer a high standard of professional care. Depending on the level of responsibility you are aiming at, entry can be as unqualified staff at Level 2 or Level 3 Qualified. Anyone applying to work with children is subject to an enhanced check by the Criminal Records Bureau’s disclosure service.

There is a variety of nursery and childcare provision on the island ranging from full time day care centres, term time nurseries and playgroups. In addition to working in nurseries or playgroups you could also register as a childminder and look after children in your own home. All childcare facilities help to support all areas of child development for children ranging from 0-8 years in a variety of settings.

Registration and Inspection

The Registration and Inspection Team is responsible for ensuring that care services on the Isle of Man comply with the Regulation of Care Act and Regulations (2013)
