Won millions by text?
The Office of Fair Trading is advising people to be wary if they receive text messages stating they have won millions.
The Office has been contacted by a number of people who have received such texts over the past few days. Manx Telecom has also received a considerable number of enquiries.
To receive the “millions” you have to provide personal and financial information. The implications of providing a stranger with such information is clear so remember if you receive a text like this:-
- Be sceptical. Ask yourself how you could win a prize without entering a competition.
- Remember that, if you have won something, you shouldn't have to pay anything to receive your prize.
- Never reveal credit card or bank account details unless you're sure who you're dealing with.
Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading, Bill Henderson MHK said “Consumers should be very careful to ensure that they know who they are dealing with. Never take risks with your personal or financial information. If it gets into the wrong hands it can be disastrous for you. Bank accounts can be emptied and your personal details used to set up fraudulent identities. If you get a text like this – press the “delete” button”.
Protect your financial information - Never give your bank account or card details to someone you aren’t satisfied is legitimate.
