Update on planning for Martin Ward Rehabilitation Services

Friday, 12 June 2026

Manx Care is providing a further update following recent public discussion regarding the future of rehabilitation services currently delivered through Martin Ward.

Recent weeks have seen increased media and social media commentary after the accidental disclosure of confidential planning discussions. Manx Care recognises that this has caused understandable concern among staff, residents’ families, and the wider community, and acknowledges that it would have preferred to communicate directly and sensitively as plans evolved.

As part of its commitment to transparency and engagement, senior leaders have met with staff and relatives to listen carefully to their views and concerns. Dedicated sessions were held with staff on 20 May and with relatives on 11 June, providing an opportunity to understand the potential impact of any proposed changes.

An options paper is currently being developed for presentation to the Manx Care Board in July. This paper will outline potential approaches for the future delivery of rehabilitation service provided by Martin Ward. One of the options included in the earliest stages of planning was the possible relocation of this service to Reayrt Skyal.

Following detailed discussions with staff and families, and after careful consideration of the potential impact on residents, relatives, and the local community, Manx Care has decided to remove Reayrt Skyal from the options appraisal.

This decision reflects the strength of feeling expressed during engagement and the importance of maintaining public confidence and ensuring patient wellbeing. Manx Care believes this is the most appropriate and responsible course of action at this time.

Work will now progress on the remaining options, with a continued focus on delivering safe, high-quality rehabilitation services that fully meet the needs of patients and the community.

Manx Care is communicating this update directly with staff, residents’ families, and local stakeholders, including Ramsey Commissioners, to ensure clarity and transparency as the process moves forward.

Our thanks go to staff, families, and the community for their engagement, support, and understanding during what has been a sensitive and difficult situation.
