The Isle of Man Government has introduced a consistent approach to English assessment in every primary school this month, with plans to extend it to all schools by September 2026.
The new English Entitlement and Assessment Frameworks, which have been successfully piloted in selected primary schools over the last 12 months, set clear end-of-year expectations for children from Year 1 to Year 6.
They are designed to help learners master key skills and concepts, embed learning securely, and make steady progress year on year.
To ensure consistency and smooth transition between the primary and secondary phases, the Department aims to have the English Entitlement and Assessment Framework covering Year 1 to Year 7 fully rolled out the next academic year.
For learners, this means a clearer understanding of their own learning journey. Children who may need to move schools will benefit from shared expectations and a common assessment language. Parents will gain confidence through consistent information about what their child is expected to achieve, while teachers will benefit from more meaningful assessment practices and shared professional development opportunities.
The frameworks were developed in partnership with English and Literacy Leads across the Island. To ensure strong delivery, the Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) has appointed a new English Lead Practitioner, who will coordinate training, assessment workshops, and provide strategic support for schools.
