Engagement is taking place on a project to implement 20mph speed limits in residential areas across the Island.
The measures are being proposed by the Department of Infrastructure in line with a commitment by Tynwald in 2023.
Reducing traffic speeds in residential areas is seen as an important step towards improving people’s quality of life and creating streets that are safe and inclusive. The zones will reflect the ambition of Our Island Plan to ‘consider our built environment, transport and the road systems, supporting improved quality of life for everyone, including young people and families’.
No new traffic calming measures will be implemented under the initiative. The focus is on the installation of new signage, raising public awareness and encouraging compliance through behaviour change.
Schools are included in the strategy and will see existing signs replaced in addition to the installation of flashing lights to highlight when drivers should take extra care.
