Thursday, 15 October 2020

The Isle of Man Government is seeking representatives of key groups and industry sectors to join the Citizens’ Forum on Climate Change.

The aim is to have individuals who are able to represent key identified sectors. Those applying should have relevant experience of their sector and be able to communicate with a range of other groups or businesses within the sector.

Further research, following on from the work to inform the phase one action plan, has identified a number of existing established representative organisations, who have been contacted by the Climate Change Transformation Team (CCTT). These sectors include:

  • Business – Chamber of Commerce Climate Change Programme
  • Land Users/Agriculture - MNFU
  • Construction/Trade – IoM Construction
  • Young Business Leaders – Chamber of Commerce FUEL
  • Climate Change Action Group – IoM Climate Change Coalition
  • Architects – Isle of ManSociety of Architects

However, where the team have not identified an established representative organisation the CCTT would like to hear from anyone who feels they can represent any of the following industry sectors or groups:

  • Transport
  • Wildlife/biodiversity
  • Small Businesses
  • Energy Users
  • Vulnerable
  • Students

The 12 invited members will join 24 further members, selected at random from the electoral register or via the application process. The forum will hear from a wide range of people including academics, researchers and campaigners to participate in discussions. Feedback on the views of the forum will then be passed the Climate Change Transformation Board, the main decision making body for Government climate action.

Citizens' Forum on Climate Change Chair, Mr Ralph Peake MHK said:

‘We are looking for enthusiastic individuals, with appropriate expertise in representing key sectors and groups, to join the forum alongside those who came through the application process and those randomly selected from the electoral register. This all forms part of building a forum that is broadly representative of our Island community.

‘The forum will cover many different aspects of climate action and it is therefore hugely important that we have members who understand the experiences and challenges within their stakeholder group and the communities they interact with.’

Citizens' Forum on Climate Change Vice-Chair, Mrs Jane Poole-Wilson MLC added:

‘We have had a great response from individuals wishing to represent their community with applications in excess of 200. It is my hope that the people within the key sectors will show similar enthusiasm to join the forum and to help implement climate actions.’
