Students to explore their transferable skills at event

Friday, 25 October 2019

The 2019 Employment and Skills event will see a diverse range of local businesses and industries inspiring the Island’s students as they find out more about the world of work and understand the importance of broad, transferable skills.

The event, at the Villa Marina on 7 November 2019 is open between 9am and 5pm, when employers will be meeting with young people, from the Island’s secondary schools, who are making choices about which subjects to study and how these choices fit with future career aspirations.

The day also provides the opportunity for members of the public to come and explore different economic sectors and pathways to employment, whilst considering their own employability skills. Over 50 organisations will be present in the Royal Hall and the Promenade Suite.

Graham Cregeen MHK, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture said:

‘The event theme of More is More reflects that, the more meaningful encounters young people have with employers whilst still in education and training, the more likely they are to be motivated and successful when they enter employment.

‘Activities such as the Employment and Skills event, careers lessons and work experience mean that our students are engaging with employers as they begin explore their future plans for work and qualifications.’

Schools Adviser for Careers and Employability, Jan Gimbert said:

‘The students attending will explore how their knowledge, experiences and skills can transfer into the workplace.

‘By interviewing employers in three sectors, they will find out more about the importance of developing broad transferable employability skills, such as team work, communication, self-awareness, problem solving, ability to learn and resilience. These abilities clearly relate to the learning dispositions in our Essentials for Learning curriculum.’

The Employment and Skills event supports the Isle of Man Government’s aim to ensure the workforce has the skills required to meet the needs of a growing and diversified economy.
