Tynwald update on independent healthcare review

Thursday, 3 January 2019

Tynwald will receive a progress report on the ongoing fundamental review into the future funding of the Island’s health and social care system this month.

The 12-month review is being conducted by Sir Jonathan Michael, a distinguished clinician and former chief executive of three NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK, with a final report due to be presented for discussion in May.

The move to establish a review was supported by Tynwald Members in January 2018 in response to the Department of Health and Social Care repeatedly exceeding its annual budget.

The motion was tabled by Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan MHK, who stressed the need for clear evidence to determine whether the DHSC is adequately funded and if its services are appropriately designed and efficiently delivered.

An initial online public consultation took place during the summer. Since then, evidence has been collected from healthcare service users and providers, the Isle of Man Government and the wider public.

Minister Cannan said:

‘The progress report is an important milestone in this review process. It highlights the key themes emerging from Sir Jonathan’s review and will focus our thinking as we consider priorities for the future.

‘I thank Sir Jonathan and his team for all the hard work which has been undertaken so far and look forward to receiving the final report.’

Health and Social Care Minister David Ashford has also welcomed the interim report:

‘I’m delighted at the progress which has been made by Sir Jonathan and his team. He’s raised a number of important issues which we will expand on once we have the final report.’
