Laxey School opens up ‘The Youth Den’

Wednesday, 26 September 2018

Laxey School has opened up its very own ‘Youth Den’, a purpose-built room within the school designed for sole use as a youth centre for the Laxey & Lonan Junior Youth Club.

Previously a room has been made available by the school but after holding a very successful and busy club in the school it was clear that a dedicated room was going to be needed.

The Youth Den was officially declared open by Ann Corlett MHK, representing the Island’s Youth Service. Speaking after cutting the ribbon, she said:

'It’s great to see facilities within our schools like this one, supporting all the good work done by the service. We need to make sure that this work is as widely promoted as it can be, so that as many of our young people as possible can benefit from it.'

Laxey & Lonan Junior Youth Club is for young people in school years 4, 5 and 6. Age groups are split up in to two groups with alternate sessions on Friday nights. Activities include arts and crafts, plus sport and games.

The Youth Service operates around 30 youth clubs across the island, an outdoor education centre, an ‘emotional support service’ in all secondary schools and drop-in café facilities in Onchan and Douglas.

Further information on the Youth Service is available from Nigel Howard (principal youth officer) on 686056 or by email at nigel.howard@sch.im
