Financial Sanctions: Chemical Weapons

This news release is issued to publicise a new sanctions regime introduced to counter the threat posed by the use and proliferation of chemical wepons.

On 15 October 2018, the Council of the European Union adopted Council Regulation (EU) 2018/1542. The restrictive measures target persons and entities who are directly responsible for the development and use of chemical weapons as well as those who provide financial, technical or material support, and those who assist, encourage or are associated with them.

The European Union (Chemical Weapons Sanctions) Order 2018, applies the provisions of the EU Regulation, as modified by the Schedule to the Order, as part of the law of the Island.

The Chemical Weapons Sanctions Regulations 2018 puts in place enforcement provisions for breaches of the financial sanctions contained in the EU Regulation.

To date no individuals or entities have been included in Annex I of the EU Regulation.
