Isle of Man Sport Lecture 2018: Overcoming Adversity

Tuesday, 9 October 2018

Andy GrantOn 25 October, inspirational runner Andy Grant will deliver the 6th Isle of Man Sport Lecture, which this year will be held at the University College Isle of Man at 7.30pm.

No stranger to adversity, having lost his mother to leukaemia when he was aged 12, Andy joined the Royal Marines Commandos at 17 and was blown up by an IED during a tour in Afghanistan.

After struggling with his injuries Andy took the decision to have his leg amputated. Not willing to be defined by his circumstances Andy went on to achieve a number of impressive feats, from learning to surf and ski, to climbing some of the world’s highest mountains.

Andy turned to his attention to sport and in particular athletics, where he has become the world’s fastest single-leg amputee, running the 10km in an impressive time of 37:17, alongside winning titles at the Invictus Games. Andy aims to bring this time down further and also become the world’s fastest single leg amputee over 5km.

At this year’s Isle of Man Sport Lecture Andy will talk about how he approaches life despite the circumstances he has found himself in, and how life will put you in all kinds of challenging situations but it need not determine you as a person.

Tickets cost just £2 and the proceeds of the event will be donated to Isle of Man Sport Aid to help support the Island’s talented athletes in their pursuit of sporting success.
