Consultation on financial support to help people continue living independently

Tuesday, 1 May 2018

The views of the public are being sought on plans to make financial support available for people living with long-term health conditions to adapt their homes and continue living independently.

A consultation is currently underway asking for people’s views on proposals by the Department of Infrastructure to provide assistance of up to £30,000, or £50,000 in cases of exceptional need, following clinical recommendation.

The means-tested grants or loans would be used to either buy equipment or make adaptations to a person’s home and will consolidate the arrangements currently in place between the Department of Health and Social Care and Department for Infrastructure.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer MHK said:

‘The Department recognises the importance of a good quality of life and appreciates that those with long-term health conditions wish to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible.

‘I understand the benefit of adapting our residents’ homes to meet their needs, and feel strongly that everyone should be enabled to enjoy a good standard of life.’

The consultation invites comments on the Department of Infrastructure’s proposed House Improvement (Adaptions) Scheme 2018 before the scheme is finalised and taken forward for approval by Tynwald.

Responses can be submitted using the Government Consultation Hub.

The closing date for comments is 12 June 2018. For further information, email housing@gov.im

The proposal fulfils a commitment contained in the Programme for Government to help people stay well in their own homes, avoiding hospital and residential care wherever possible.
