Research review role offers unique opportunity

Thursday, 8 March 2018

A fascinating role in Manx public life is on offer for an individual with the experience and insight to lead a new research oversight committee.

A search is underway for a Chair for the newly-formed Isle of Man Research Ethics Committee (IOMREC). The committee will be tasked with reviewing the ethical dimensions of all proposed health and social care research projects which involve human participants, tissue or data.

This unique opportunity offers a progressive role leading a new committee. Its core aim is to protect the interests of patients and the public, by upholding research standards which respect the dignity, rights, safety and wellbeing of those taking part.

The committee will review a wide range of projects, from clinical research into new medical treatments to studies about the experience of staff in the health and social care system.

Head of Research and Development at the Department of Health and Social Care Dr Becky Rowley said:

‘Research is a fascinating and dynamic field and we are really excited to be forming a committee which will be at the forefront of this important work.’

She added:

‘We welcome applicants from all sections of society. You don’t need to have a medical or social care background, and previous formal research experience is beneficial but not essential. What’s most important is that you are forward thinking and have a passion for research in health and social care’.

DHSC Minister David Ashford MHK said:

‘With the introduction of the Research and Development Unit we are hoping to promote and encourage a culture of research across the Department, and streamline the research process.

‘Research in the area of health and social care is essential as it creates knowledge which can improve the health and wellbeing of patients, staff and the public in the Isle of Man.’

The vacancy for Chair of IOMREC is currently being advertised in the local press. Committee members are also needed, both lay people and those with experience in health and social care or research, and these vacancies will be advertised in the coming weeks.
