A £4.2 million programme of investment in swimming facilities at the National Sports Centre (NSC) demonstrates Government’s ongoing commitment to sport and recreation.
Both the competition and leisure pools will be closed from Saturday 4 August 2018, with the extensive works due to progress over nine months, with re-opening scheduled for May 2019, prior to the TT period.
All other facilities at the NSC will remain open as normal.
The moveable floor of the 25 metre competition pool and the two flume rides of the leisure pool – now 20 years old – are to be replaced.
A new zero-depth wet play area is to be created adjacent to the existing leisure pools.
The changing areas are to be fully refurbished under the scheme.
Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, Graham Cregeen MHK, said:
'I welcome this significant investment in one of the Island’s key sports facilities, which demonstrates Government’s commitment to sport.
'The Programme for Government sets out a number of targets around health and wellbeing: such as increasing the number of people regularly undertaking physical exercise, and increasing healthy life expectancy.
'Access to sports facilities plays a key role in realising these ambitions. The Island has invested considerably in sport over the past 25 years and we continue to reap rewards from this.'
The public will be able to access the three other public swimming pools in Castletown, Peel, and Ramsey. Additional early bird swimming, children swimming lessons, and aquafit will transfer to the pool at Ballakermeen High School. These sessions need to be booked in advance and anyone interested should contact the NSC on 688588.
