European Union (Maldives Sanctions) Order 2018 and Maldives Sanctions Regulations 2018

This news release is issued to publicise a new sanctions regime in respect of the Maldives.

On 16 July 2018, the Council of the European Union adopted Council Regulation (EU) 2018/1001 imposing restrictive measures against persons and entities responsible for undermining the rule of law or obstructing an inclusive political solution in the Maldives, as well as persons and entities responsible for serious human rights violations or abuses.

The European Union (Maldives Sanctions) Order 2018 which comes into operation today applies the EU instrument to the Island with certain modifications. The Maldives Sanctions Regulations 2018 also coming into operation today, establish the penalties for offences in relation to the EU Regulation and provide that the Treasury may issues licences to authorise certain activities permitted under the EU Regulation.

To date, no individuals or entities have been included in Annex I of the Regulation.
