Local students gain experience in advanced manufacturing

Thursday, 16 March 2017

AMTC StudentsThis week local students were given the opportunity to use computer-controlled machinery and explore the options for further education in the growing manufacturing sector.

The 35 Castle Rushen High School students visited the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC) to complete their GCSE Design and Technology projects.

Lawrie Hooper MHK, Member of the Department of Education and Children and Member of the Department of Economic Development with responsibility for manufacturing, commented:

‘This project is the perfect combination of educational and vocational training. The students were not only given the chance to complete their projects on real industry standard equipment, they were also given a taste of the excellent training facilities we have on the Isle of Man and the many routes of development for budding engineers.’

John Cashin, Tutor for the Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering course, commented:

‘The visit to the AMTC gives the students an insight into how manufacturing works on the Island and the opportunities that are available to them on leaving school if they are interested in a career in engineering.

‘Through a continued collaboration between University College Isle of Man (UCM), the manufacturing industry and Department of Economic Development we are meeting the Island’s skills shortage in the manufacturing sector, supporting over 50 engineering apprenticeships in the last 3 years.

‘The option to visit and make use of the AMTC’s equipment is open to all secondary schools that have a project or assessment but don’t have the machinery to make it. We have the ability to come and pick students up and bring them to the AMTC at Hills Meadow which logistically makes thing easier for the schools.’

For further information on the engineering course, visit the University College Isle of Man open morning on Saturday 18th March from 9am-12pm in the main hall.
