The Utterly Butterly Ukulele Project visits the Isle of Man for the first time

Tuesday, 20 June 2017

Ballasalla School has been lucky enough to be the first school on the Isle of Man to take part in a whole school workshop run by The Utterly Butterly Ukulele Project. (TUBUP) – a music and junk instrument making workshop.

The team, Steve 'Nutter' Nutter, Nick 'Prof' Penny and Dave 'Brother' Anderson brought everything with them that the pupils would need to make their own TUB-Ukulele. The TUBS are constructed from an Utterly Butterly tub, a piece of wood and fishing line for strings. To everyone’s amazement the TUB-Uke is fully functional, tunable and is played in the same way as a conventional ukulele.

The first part of the day consisted of making their ukuleles with lots of concentration showing clearly on the children’s faces. Older pupils and teachers assisted younger members of the school. In the afternoon, the TUBUP team taught the children how to play their new instruments with a whole school rehearsal prior to putting on a short performance for parents at the end of the school day.

The session was kindly sponsored by the Abbey Restaurant in Ballasalla.

Steve from the TUBUP team, says:

'It has been fantastic to be here on the Isle of Man, our first visit with this project. We would love to come back again if there are any other schools that would like to have a visit from the team just visit our website www.tubup.org. The children have all been great with everyone really engaged in the project'

Teacher Nic Moorcroft says:

'The workshop has been so much more than we thought it was going to be. The children have worked really well together with older children helping the younger ones to build their instrument.'

Alexandra Cowley, pupil aged 10, says:

'It was brilliant! I really enjoyed making my own instrument and learning to play it.'

Caiden Levick, pupil aged 10, says:

'The best bit was being able to make something like this from a margarine tub!'
