Championing Manx produce

Andy Hardy, Manager of The CourthouseA newly-launched food label that clearly identifies produce as being Manx has been adopted for the first time by a local eating establishment.

The provenance label was launched by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA) in May as part of the Food Matters strategy, telling shoppers which produce is Manx and how buying it supports the local economy.

The distinctive label supports the Department of Economic Development’s Taste Harvest Scheme which, in partnership with DEFA, recognises eating establishments and visitor accommodation providers that are championing local produce. The Taste Harvest Scheme is part of the Taste quality assurance scheme.

The Courthouse Bar & Restaurant, in Douglas, has been given approval to bear the provenance label in its marketing as it is able to demonstrate its use of Manx produce.

It joined the Taste Harvest Scheme last year and has been a member of Taste for eight years.

Laurence Skelly MHK, Minister for Economic Development, commented:

‘The aim of these initiatives is to champion local businesses that are actively promoting the fantastic range of quality Manx produce that is available.

‘By doing so, we are supporting those who showcase the Isle of Man as a fantastic place to live, work, visit and invest.’

Tim Baker MHK, Member for Environment, Food and Agriculture, commented:

‘It is great to see Courthouse Bar & Restaurant, which has long been proud to promote Manx produce, become the first eating establishment to adopt the provenance label.

‘I would strongly encourage others in the food and drink and hospitality sectors to follow in their footsteps and help shoppers to support local businesses and the local economy.’
