Register for annual DEFA walk next week

Monday, 5 June 2017

The public is invited to view the flora and fauna of a farm in the west of the Island.

Creglea Farm, Dalby, is one of 21 Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs) in the Island.

The privately owned farm boasts rich grasslands (pasture and hay meadow) and coastal habitats such as reeds and grassland.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA) is organising a walk at the farm on Tuesday 13th June at 7pm.

Thirty people can be accommodated and it’s necessary to register via Richard Selman, DEFA’s Senior Biodiversity Officer for Zoology, on 01624 695740 or richard.selman@gov.im, stating number of walkers/vehicles.

Walkers should meet in the car park of the Manx National Heritage café at Niarbyl. Stout footwear should be worn as some of the terrain will be rough/rutted. Walkers cannot bring dogs.

Dr Selman said:

‘As part of our strategy to encourage people to explore and appreciate our natural environment, DEFA organises a walk to a different site of interest each year.

As an ASSI, Creglea Farm boasts interesting plant and bird life, which we hope to see.’

Details of the Island’s ASSIs can be found at DEFA Protected Sites.
