Spending equates to £12,277 per person

Total Government spending projected for 2017/18 equates to around £12,277 per head for every man, woman and child of the Island’s population. [See note]

This per person figure includes:

  • £3,903 for Social Security payments such as the State Pension, Income Support and Child Benefit, plus £613 for Social Care including £194 for Children’s Services and £419 for Adult Services
  • £2,531 for Health Services, including £228 for providing free or subsidised prescriptions or drugs, and £232 for treating Manx patients in the United Kingdom
  • £1,202 for Education, including £124 for University Fees
  • £1,183 for former Government employee pensions, of which around £247 comes from current employee contributions
  • £405 for the Police, Fire, Prison and other parts of the Department of Home Affairs
  • £218 for supporting the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture
  • £130 for Public Transport and Heritage Railways
  • £140 for Waste Management, in addition a further £70 raised via local authorities or business waste charges
  • £60 for Sports and Arts, including subsidising local swimming pools
  • £13 for the Ports, with a further £129 raised in charges
  • £14 for Drainage and operation of the sewerage system excluding rates
