Department and Commissioners welcome housing initiative

Friday, 3 February 2017

Peel Town Commissioners are taking over responsibility for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the Government’s public sector properties in the town.

The agreement strengthens the focus on partnership working between central and local government, with the aim of providing effective housing services that meet the needs of tenants.

Responsibility for 20 homes in Carmane Close and Derby Drive will transfer from the Department of Infrastructure to Peel Town Commissioners with effect from Monday 6 February. Tenants have met officers from the Department and the Commissioners on a number of occasions to learn more about the new arrangements.

The agreement will initially operate for two years; it is hoped that the pilot project will be extended if it proves successful.

The move in Peel continues the progress being achieved across the Isle of Man to enhance the provision of public sector housing. Other positive initiatives include the introduction of a shared housing waiting list in the south of the Island.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer MHK said:

‘The agreement with Peel Town Commissioners is further evidence of how the Department and local authorities are working together in the best interests of the people we serve. The needs of our tenants are at the very heart of the changes we are introducing.’

Christine Moughtin, Chairman of Peel Town Commissioners commented:

‘The Commissioners welcome the opportunity to take on the management of the Department’s 20 houses in Peel, which will result in a single point of contact for those who need to access public sector housing services in Peel. The addition of these properties to the Commissioners’ 334 properties will greatly simplify this service and reduce the management costs.’

Mrs Moughtin added:

‘I originally came into local politics to increase local accountability and access to public sector housing and this function transfer is a positive first step designed to benefit existing tenants and those local residents who require access to this service.’
