Students support a Community Christmas

Thursday, 14 December 2017

Ramsey Grammar School's new Way of Being initiative has a half-termly focus, and this half-term it is Community. Students across the school are encouraged to look beyond the school itself and see how they can have a positive effect on others.

Aware that not everyone receives Christmas Cards, 150 Year 8 students have been researching festive poems, jokes, stories, songs, and literary references to put in Christmas Cards, alongside a short, personal introduction of themselves and their thoughts on different topics (such as Christmas, school, interests, etc). These cards will then be given to Age Concern via their shop in Ramsey.

The Age Concern charity are going to distribute these cards through the Meals on Wheels service, as well as through personal delivery to local care homes, supported living facilities, hospital wards, and anywhere were there may be elderly people who would appreciate the Christmas contact.

English teacher, Jenn Nickson, who is organising the event said:

‘We are delighted with this opportunity to build a partnership with elderly neighbours in our local community. We hope that this event will improve students’ understanding of the challenges faced by older people who may not have the family network which can be so taken for granted at this time of year. We hope that we will be able to work alongside Age Concern in the coming months and develop some of these links so that young people can share their experiences of growing up on the Isle of Man.’
