A Douglas school has linked up with Douglas railway station contractors to improve the appearance of the building site while a £1.2million refurbishment is underway.
Creative Year 4 pupils at Scoill Vallajeelt painted a train on several metres of hoardings including self-portraits of themselves as passengers on the Dining Car carriages and class teacher Nick George as the train driver.
The Tickethall provided each child with one of their famous fireman’s shovels and these are displayed bearing the artists’ names above their portraits. The station restaurant also arranged for the class to be taken to view the hoardings on Wednesday (15 June 2016) and to have their packed lunches in the Dining Car carriages.
Additionally, The Tickethall judged all the paintings and presented a prize of vouchers for a family fireman’s breakfast to winner Giorgia Ciccone.
The mural which stretches the width of the front car park was produced at the invitation of Cedar Developments, the station work’s principal contractor.
Alex Burnett of Cedar Developments explained: ‘We are keen to engage the community as part of our interest in the Considerate Construction Scheme, a British Isles-wide initiative that aims to encourage contractors to work together with the environment and general public.
‘The mural is our entry in the scheme’s Ivor Goodsite Hoarding Competition and the children will be presented with certificates and medals to show their involvement and to thank them for their efforts. As well as improving the building site, the website has lots of games and information available to everyone to make children aware of safety around construction sites.’
Scoill Vallajeelt Year 4 teacher Nick George commented: ‘The children were delighted to paint the train and themselves as passengers on the hoardings. It was a big project so we painted the hoardings in our sports hall over a very short time. It is a real art installation that they have enjoyed seeing in place.’
An adjudicator from Considerate Construction was present when the children visited the mural. The hoarding competition’s regional winners and overall national winner will be announced later in the summer.
