Rotary Club of Douglas have welcomed the Members of the first ever Island RotaKids Club

Wednesday, 1 June 2016

Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Douglas have welcomed the Members of the first ever Island RotaKids Club, which has been established at Scoill yn Jubilee.

Rota Kids Club LogoThe new Club has been formed with the cooperation of the Head Teacher, Jayne Adamson, and teachers from the school, with an initial membership of 8 pupils representing each of the year groups between Year 3 and Year 6.

RotaKids is an exciting way for those 12 and under to lead and engage in important, lively activities that will make a positive difference in their school, in their local community and globally.

At the same time RotaKids develop the ability and confidence to take up their place in society as responsible, successful, effective citizens both now and in the future.

The Scoill yn Jubilee RotaKids Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Douglas, which was the first ever Rotary Club established on the Island in 1924.

As citizenship is part of the school curriculum this is an opportunity for Rotary to support and expand the work already happening in school. The decisions made always involve the RotaKids. Jobs for fundraising or service projects can be divided up between the class in lesson times. This develops teamwork.

Rotary mentors from within the Rotary Club of Douglas will be available to support the children with their projects as required, and then work with the RotaKids to deliver the projects, helping with the background information and any logistical problems.

The Members of Scoill yn Jubilee RotaKids Club have taken the following Pledge to demonstrate their commitment to being good citizens:

"As a RotaKid,
I endeavour to be fair to all
to serve my community
and to show respect for others"

RotaKids will come up with ideas like:

  • fundraising money for charity,
  • leading on school and local community improvement projects
  • improving the environment,
  • helping the elderly
  • helping children in another country. The sky is the limit.

Rotary Club of Douglas President, Kevin Kneen, says he is extremely proud his Club has been able to work with Scoill yn Jubilee pupils to establish an Island first, and looks forward to his Club supporting the children for many years to come. He has no doubt the Scoill yn Jubilee RotaKids Club will go from strength to strength.

Two of the Members of the new Scoill yn Jubilee RotaKids Club were asked for their feelings about Rotakids: -

'Being part of RotaKids will help us to communicate with others and work as a team.'

'We are looking forward to helping our community and people around the world by raising money for different charities on the Island.'

Kevin Kneen says that the Rotary Club of Douglas would also welcome any other Island schools or youth groups who would like to consider starting up a RotaKids Club of their own to get in touch with him at kevinkneen@outlook.com
