History & Heritage courses at UCM

Thursday, 25 August 2016

There is still time to apply for the BA (Hons) History & Heritage at University College Isle of Man (UCM).  The course begins on 29 September and runs for three years (full-time) or six years (part-time). Applications are welcomed from both school-leavers and mature students.

First-year History & Heritage students at UCM

This University of Chester degree is taught wholly at UCM, with students benefiting from the extraordinary resources available on the Island for the study of history & heritage. It’s a wide-ranging degree which covers aspects of history and heritage ranging from ancient times to the late 20th century and encompassing the Isle of Man, the UK, Europe, and the wider world.

Employability skills are a key part of the degree programme, and close relationships with the University of Chester and Manx National Heritage provide students with many opportunities for work-based learning. In particular, students have the opportunity to undertake a 5-week work placement in their second year, either on the Isle of Man or abroad.

Programme Leader, Dr Catriona Mackie, explains the benefits of studying at UCM:

‘Students at UCM are much more likely to find relevant employment when they graduate than their UK counterparts, and they’re also more likely to graduate with a higher class of degree. This is partly due to our excellent teaching staff and resources, but it’s also because of our small class sizes, which means that each student gets a high level of academic support, throughout their degree. It’s also really good value and Studying at UCM means that school-leavers don’t have to pay the fee-contribution that is required when studying in the UK.’

In addition to the degree, UCM offers two evening courses in Manx history and heritage. Both courses can be taken for credit (with students submitting assignments), or for interest only.

‘Introduction to the Isle of Man’ is a 24-week course that offers a broad introduction to Manx archaeology, history, and culture through a combination of taught classes and site visits. This course covers a wide variety of topics, including the geology and archaeology of the Island; its social, economic, and political history; its built and natural environments; and its language, literature, music, and folklore. Each session will be taught by a lecturer who is a specialist in that area.

‘A History of the Isle of Man: AD 979 to the Present’ provides a detailed overview of Manx history over the last thousand years. It covers all of the main periods and events, and introduces students to the key figures from different eras. Students will explore the sources that are available for the study of Manx history, and will learn how to study some of the relevant documents, from the period of the Vikings through to the present day.

Further information about the degree and the evening classes can be found on the UCM website: www.ucm.ac.im. All enquiries regarding UCM courses should be directed to the Higher Education Administrator at HE@ucm.ac.im or on +44 1624 648278.
