Isle of Man Sport Aid congratulates Mark Cavendish

Tuesday, 16 August 2016

Isle of Man Sport Aid is delighted at the success of Mark Cavendish, who has won a silver medal in the Omnium at the Rio Olympics, his third Olympic Games.

Mark received support from Sport Aid from 2000 to 2005, when he won his first World Championship. He has, on many occasions, acknowledged how much the support helped him at that time in his career.

In 2012, he set up a series of Cavendish Scholarships and this initiative is now in its fifth year. This provides a generous scholarship to three Sport Aid recipients as well as support to a number of young cyclists to attend Regional School of Racing training in the UK. He has also regularly attended the Isle of Man Bank Sports Awards and also cut the turf when the IOM Sport Institute was built in 2008/09.

Last year, he also took time out of his busy schedule to attend the launch of the Isle of Man Sport Aid Academy.

Chris Quine, Sports Performance Co-ordinator with Isle of Man Sport, commented:

'When I first met Mark in 2004 I was struck by his self-belief and determination to be the best cyclist he could possibly be. He told me what he was going to achieve and he has now done all the things he said that he would do.'

Sarah Corlett, Chairman of IOM Sport Aid, said:

'Mark has been a fantastic ambassador for the Isle of Man for over a decade. We are very proud that we helped him in the early part of his career and equally proud that he is now helping others to try and follow in his footsteps. We would like to send our congratulations to him on becoming the first Manxman to win an individual Olympic medal.'

Isle of Man Sport Aid is a registered charity, established in 1991 by Isle of Man Sport, to provide support to the Isle of Man’s high performing sportsmen and women.
