Sarah Hendy selected for Inter-Island arts project

Wednesday, 6 May 2015

hendyWhilst the twenty-four Island nations compete in the NatWest Island Games this summer in Jersey, artists from all the Islands will come together to create a shared work for public display.

Manx artist Sarah Hendy, who specialises in wearable art, has been selected by the Jersey Arts Trust to represent the Island during the 10-day residential Inter-Island Artist Lock-In.

Supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council, Sarah will join artists from across the world with a variety of experience, disciplines and backgrounds.

The aim is to provide artists with time and space to learn from each other and respond to the diverse structures and landscapes of Elizabeth Castle, itself cut off from mainland Jersey for 12 hours a day by the tide.

Manx born Sarah Hendy is creatively inspired by the interactions of people. Her love of adventure, travelling and art was cultivated by her time studying at the United World College of the Atlantic.

Former Isle of Man Arts Council Artist in Residence at the Sayle Gallery in Douglas, Sarah said:

'I am honoured to have the opportunity to represent the Isle of Man during the project, and I thank the Isle of Man Arts Council for their ongoing support.

'The Artist Lock-in on the island of Elizabeth Castle will build the sense of a whole new community in an inspiring location, focusing on the theme of 'Islandness', reflecting on the similarities and differences of our Islands.

'I hope to share the Manx history, music, stories, and traditions which shaped my cultural identity and have the chance to learn about the varied cultures, heritage and lives of the other participants.'

Specialising in wearable art – the genre of extravagant, concept-driven adornment – Sarah's most recent projects include an Archibald Knox inspired dress for the patron of Manx Cancer Help, singer-songwriter Katie Melua, and an optical fibre ball gown that was showcased at the New Zealand World of WearableArt Awards Show last year.

Mr Geoff Corkish MBE MLC, Chairman of the Isle of Man Arts Council said:

'Sarah is an inspirational local artist with a unique talent. I commend the Jersey Arts Trust for their choice and feel sure that Sarah, along with all the other artists, will foster a spirit of community, creativity and cooperation during the project.'

The Jersey Arts Trust Inter-Island Artist Lock-in 'An Island off an Island' takes place between 22 June and 2 July.

The project will be facilitated by Sue Hill, Associate Director of Wildworks Theatre Company supported by Jersey performer and producer Francesca Duncan.
